Denizen Works, a UK-based architecture studio, has completed its first Japanese house design in Onimichi, Japan. The house features a minimalist approach with a blank street-facing facade, offering privacy and views of the sea. The design blends traditional Japanese elements with modern architecture, creating a unique sanctuary for the owners.
“The core concept was to use the building as a private sanctuary overlooking the Setonai islands,” said Denizen Works founder Murray Kerr. The design maximizes the natural surroundings while maintaining an intimate and private atmosphere.
Privacy and Tradition in Japanese House Design
This Japanese house design includes two main sections: a two-storey main house and a single-storey studio. The studio partially encloses a small garden. The layout draws inspiration from traditional Japanese homes, where the main house (Omoya) and annex (Hanare) separate work and living spaces.
The street-facing facade is blank, creating an enigmatic quality. Kerr explained, “Placing the entrance in an entirely blank facade gives the house a sense of mystery and ensures privacy.”
Interior Layout: Blending Japanese and Western Design Elements
Inside the Japanese house, the ground floor includes a bedroom and bathroom. The upper floor is an open-plan kitchen and dining room. The windows are placed at varying heights to allow clear sea views, whether sitting on the floor, sofa, or at the table.
The design merges British proportions with traditional Japanese timber frame construction. The result is a home that feels both familiar and unique, blending traditional Japanese house design with modern elements.
Collaborating with Take Architects on Japanese House Design
Denizen Works worked with Hiroshima-based Take Architects, who handled the construction details. Together, they combined Japanese building methods with Denizen Works’ contemporary design.
Take Architects’ expertise ensured that the house respected local traditions while adopting modern functionality.
Community Integration and Design Philosophy in Japanese House Design
Despite its bold form, the house has been embraced by the local community. Kerr noted it had become a “popular neighbor,” reflecting Denizen Works’ philosophy of creating architecture that enhances its environment.
The design pushes the boundaries of typical houses, focusing on creating an experience beyond the usual notion of home. The minimalist facade and traditional Japanese construction make it fit seamlessly into the community.
Denizen Works Expands Globally with Japanese House Design
Since its founding in 2011, Denizen Works has completed several innovative projects, including the Floating Genesis church and a house on Tiree island in Scotland. House in Onimichi marks a key milestone, showcasing the studio’s ability to blend traditional Japanese designs with modern innovations.
