How to Get Rid of the Stubborn Burnt Smell in Your Microwave

Microwaves are incredibly convenient, but a burnt smell can easily linger after cooking, especially when food is overcooked or spilled. This odor can impact the flavor of the food you reheat and make your kitchen smell unpleasant. Fortunately, you can remove these stubborn smells with a few simple steps to restore freshness to your microwave.

Why Does the Burnt Smell Linger in Your Microwave?

Burnt odors will not disappear on their own; they need to be cleaned out to completely vanish. If left unchecked, these odors will stick around, affecting the taste of any food cooked or reheated in the microwave. The key to neutralizing burnt smells lies in cleaning your appliance thoroughly. Let’s take a look at how to do this effectively.

Ventilate Your Microwave and Kitchen Area

Start by immediately ventilating the kitchen. Open all the windows, and turn on exhaust fans to help clear out the odors. Ensure your microwave is turned off and cool before proceeding. Place small bowls of baking soda around the kitchen to absorb any lingering smells. Don’t forget to turn on the microwave’s vent hood to assist in clearing the air.

Neutralize the Odors With Lemon and Vinegar

One of the most effective ways to neutralize burnt smells is by steam-cleaning with lemon and vinegar. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine one cup of water with two tablespoons of vinegar and a couple of lemon slices. Microwave this mixture for about five minutes, allowing the steam to fill the microwave. Once done, let it sit inside with the door closed for around ten minutes. The vinegar breaks down the burnt particles, while the lemon adds a refreshing fragrance.

Clean the Interior Thoroughly

After the steam has had a chance to work, carefully remove the bowl from the microwave. Now, it’s time to clean the interior. Use a damp cloth or soft sponge with dish soap to wipe down all surfaces. Make sure to remove any soap residue with a clean, damp cloth, then dry the interior with a microfiber cloth. Leave the microwave door open overnight to allow the air to circulate and ensure any remaining smells dissipate.

For Extra Stubborn Odors

If the burnt smell persists, it’s time for a deeper clean. Start by microwaving a cup of water for three to five minutes to loosen any food residue stuck inside. Allow the steam to sit for an additional 15 minutes, if necessary. Afterward, remove the turntable and wash it by hand or in the dishwasher. Wipe down the microwave’s interior with a soft cloth, dish soap, and warm water.

To tackle more stubborn odors, mix water, dish soap, and a few drops of essential oils like vanilla or eucalyptus in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray the inside of the microwave, wiping it clean afterward. If the smell remains, place a bowl of coffee grounds, sliced lemons, or an open box of baking soda inside the microwave overnight to absorb any lingering odors.

Prevent Future Burnt Smells

To prevent burnt smells from returning, there are a few habits you can adopt:

  1. Watch Your Cooking Times: Always monitor the food while it’s cooking to avoid overcooking or burning it. Ensure there is enough liquid in the food and use microwave-safe containers.
  2. Regularly Clean Your Microwave: Wipe down the interior regularly to prevent spills from turning into burnt messes.
  3. Maintain Filters: Clean the microwave’s filters every three months to prevent grease and odor buildup.
  4. Follow Recipe Instructions: Stick to the recommended cooking times and methods for microwaveable food to avoid overheating or burning.

By following these steps, you can remove stubborn burnt odors from your microwave and keep it smelling fresh. Regular cleaning and maintenance will also help prevent the smell from coming back in the future.
